B1-A. Francés.
Bonjour mes amis,

Salut.

Fede Franco SEMI PRESENCIAL B1. Inglés.

Good Morning,
I am Fede Franco from SEMI PRESENCIAL B1 Teacher Arantxa.
I did a work about CARBON FOOTPRINT conference

Dear Friends,
Last Wednesday we had a conference at the Official Language School. I know you couldn’t attend it, so I’m going to tell you what happened.
To start Daniel Lopez, a member of “Ecologista en Accion”, was introduced by someone from the Official Language School and he spoke about how to reduce the carbon footprint in our daily lives.
At the beginning of the meeting, David told us about the importance of maintaining the global average temperature because the poorest countries suffer the worst effects of all.
Then while we were watching some pictures on the screen, he told us about how important the three “R” rules: reduce, reuse and recycle are.
Finally, he gave us some advice about how we could help our planet.
In conclusion, If I had more Money, I would do everything he told us.
Take care

Reseña sobre la charla de Daniel López, de ecologistas en Acción, sobre cómo reducir la huella de carbono en nuestras vidas.

REVIEW  OF THE TALK:

“HOW TO REDUCE OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT IN OUR DAILY LIVES”
This talk was given by Daniel López Marijuan on 24th April 2019 at the EOI Cádiz as part of our "Día de Acción comunitaria". Daniel López is an activist from the environmental group Ecologistas en Acción.

The main idea of the talk is that everybody should have responsible consumption because our planet Earth is not an inexhaustible source of resources. Let's get rid of the idea of "I shop, therefore I am".

He proposes we must use a clean production model, where there is less extraction of natural resources to produce waste that will then be reusable and recyclable. This means our economy will be circular.

There is a model against climate change that suggests five actions:

1.      Live better with less things.
2.      Local consumption.
3.      Agroecology to cool the planet.
4.      100% renewable energy.
5.      Better participation in our economy.

We have to fight for the system to change, rather than for climate change. We must apply the rules of the “six Rs”: REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE, RETHINK, RESTRUCTURE AND REDISTRIBUTE. This must be the model for responsible consumption.

He exposed different acts to prevent climate change in our daily lives, like: not buying new clothes, not buying items which are produced at the expense of others, or reading the Greenpeace guide that explains how you can buy items without toxic substances.

I would strongly recommend learning about this huge problem because we have the solution in our hands.

Managing Household Waste: Reducing, Reusing, Recycling

REDUCING, REUSING, RECYCLING

Name: Laura Rodríguez Álvarez,  B2.1-B

The amount of waste which we generate every day is growing exponentially, because although less children are born, our life expectancy is greater, and in particular countries in the “First World” generate most of the garbage which is damaging our environment. Although we want to revert this huge problem we don’t always do everything we can, and therefore the ozone layer is badly damaged, although fortunately not everything is lost.

One of the problems is that we usually buy too much food, therefore we throw it away when it’s soft. Instead of this a solution is, for instance, if the fruit is too ripe we can make a healthy cake, milkshake or smoothy;  besides, the fruit that is soft is very sweet so our cake doesn’t need any extra sugar. We can also do this with soft vegetables and instead of a cake we could make a healthy vegetable pie.

About the problem of excessive packaging we should avoid buying plastic bottles. Instead of this we should buy in bulk or another option is to buy glass bottles or glass jars which we will reuse. For instance, when we buy fried tomato or olives in glass bottles later we can use them to keep other things or even food to freeze, so we will avoid the typical plastic lunchboxes.

In conclusion, not everything is lost, we can still turn it around, and improve our planet. We only need to take little steps for the change to start to happen. The simple fact of recycling at home is a good first step. For instance, separating organic and inorganic waste, and within this, paper, plastic, tins, etc: separate them for later recycling.

HOUSEHOLD WASTE: PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS

REDUCING HOUSEHOLD WASTE, by Juana Ruiz B2.1 (B)

Our current society has to deal with serious environmental problems and one of them is the excess of rubbish. Each of us produces an enormous amount of litter daily and if we do not want to end up surrounded by it, we must take action. I would like to give you some advice to improve this situation.

Firstly, we must avoid the excess of packaging when we buy anything, we must always keep this thought in mind in our daily shopping. Did you know there are shops where we can buy bulk, like in the old times? This way you can take your own containers or bags and we will produce less waste in our house and in the world.

Secondly, we must try to give a long life to our electronic devices, appliances and clothes. I wonder if it is really necessary to buy other things when they are broken or unfashionable. Can they be repaired? Is it necessary to change our mobile phone every year?  I think it is important to consider this before making a decision. If we give these items a long life, we will also produce less electronic waste, which is highly polluting. If it is not possible, we must always take them to a recycling centre. The planet will thank us for doing it!!

In conclusion, we must raise awareness about the negative impact of waste on all living creatures in our planet earth. Using things very little and throwing them away is a mistake, so we must try to cut it down. We should be more responsible and thoughtful about our consumption habits and we should always try to recycle our waste. We must not turn our planet into a huge landfill.

HOUSEHOLD WASTE: PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS

                                   ESSAY ON HOUSEHOLD RUBBISH

by Mª Bella Granado Castro, B2-1 (B) Inglés

The amount of household waste that we produce is increasing. Most food comes in plastic containers, which are taken to huge landfills when we are finished with them.  Landfills are getting full, and this produces soil, air and water pollution as well as a terrible impact on human and animal health. All this is slowly killing the planet, so what can we do to help?

To begin with, we could recycle old food containers by finding a new use for them. A great way to do it is to make people aware of the importance of recycling. For instance, metal tins can be made into a jar for storing pens and pencils, or as flower pots, rather than just throw them away. This way, people will become more environmentally aware and less rubbish will be taken to landfill sites.

Another solution could be that local councils provided more facilities to recycle large items. For example, damaged household appliances like cookers and fridges are often just left out in the street. If the local authorities provided especial collections of these items for recycling, the environment would be less polluted.

Another way to help is to compost our food waste. For example, vegetable peel can be put into the soil in our back gardens, or in pots in our balconies or window sills. This will make better quality soil and enable more plants to grow.

In conclusion, I believe there are a lot of ways to encourage people to recycle more and reduce the amount of rubbish we create. By recycling plastic and metal, and reusing food waste, we can help to make the world a cleaner place for everyone and make our environment safer and cleaner for the future. After all, who wants to be overrun by rubbish?

HEAVY TRAFFIC IN CADIZ CITY CENTRE: SOLUTIONS

HEAVY TRAFFIC IN CADIZ

PROPOSAL Nº1:

We are a group of students of English from the Official School of Languages in Cadiz, which is also an Eco-school. We have been working in class to try to solve the environmental problems of our city and we believe that one of the main problems Cadiz has is the constant increase of heavy traffic in the city centre. We want to propose some possible solutions to improve this situation. We would like to have an eco-friendly city, so each one of us has given different ideas hoping that they could be implemented in Cadiz:
·         Building an overground car park on several floors would be a good idea. Taking into consideration that our city does not have much space, this parking lot could be built on a platform on the sea.

  • ·         When the cycle lane is finished giving economic incentives to workers that use bicycles to go to work, as well as providing cheap bike rental services, could be good solutions too.

  • ·         The use of public transport should be promoted by increasing the number and the frequency of buses in the rush hours. It is also necessary to reduce the price of bus cards for residents and students. In addition to this, we think that in order to live in a less polluted city, at least 50% of the buses should run on renewable energy.

  • ·         Another way to reduce heavy traffic and pollution in the city could be creating a mobile phone application for “carpooling”, that is, sharing a car between different people. We think this option could be very interesting and economical.

  • ·         It would be necessary to build a tram line or to increase the number of trains that stop in all the stations along the way to get to the centre from the new part of the city. This would also imply reducing the price of tickets.

  • ·         Finally, another possibility to make Cadiz a more eco-friendly city would be to build a “park-and-ride” area outside the town with continuous free or very cheap shuttle bus services, so that people coming from other towns could always leave their car there and jump on a bus to get into the city centre. That way we would avoid traffic jams and reduce pollution significantly, thus creating a more pleasant city to live, work and shop in.

Obviously, all of this would require a greater involvement of our local authorities, increasing the budget to implement, at least, some of the proposed solutions.

PROPOSAL Nº 2 (EMAIL TO THE CADIZ TOWN COUNCIL)

Dear Sir/Madam,

We are writing to express our concern about the greenhouse gases, smog and environmental problems we have in our city. We are a group of students at the Official School of Languages. Ours is an eco-school and we have some proposals to improve the problem of heavy traffic in the city of Cadiz:

  • -         Encourage the use of the bicycle by the employees of businesses in the city with a bonus in their salaries. This would be paid to the people who take the bicycle instead of a car or a motorbike to go to work.
  • -         Improve public transport by introducing electronic smartcards for travelling, similar to London´s Oyster cards. These would be for young people, students, unemployed people or for everyone, and they would certainly promote the use of public transport.
  • -         Create a public hire bicycle system such as “Bicimad” in Madrid, as it would make bikes available to everyone.
  • -         Decrease the price of tickets in short distance trains because that is the reason why not many people take the train between “Cortadura and Cadiz Central”.
  • -         More shuttle bus services between the Campus in Rio San Pedro and Cadiz to cater for students and residents alike
  • -         Encourage the use of carpooling with local campaigns promoted by the City Council.

We would very grateful if you would consider our proposals.

Yours faithfully,

Miguel Angel Herrera García, Cristina Santos Casas, Antonio Menéndez Olozábal, Alejandro González Iglesias and Ignacio Conte Ortega., B2-1 (B)
